Significance & Origin
Shraddha Karma is performed annually on the death anniversary (Tithi) of a departed family member, combining pind daan, tarpan, and charitable acts performed with complete faith (shraddha) for the peace of the soul.
Origin Story
According to the Markandeya Purana, the very first Shraddha ritual is attributed to King Nimi, who, after the passing of his father, was troubled about how to properly honor him. Sage Vishwakarma and other rishis guided Nimi through the correct method of offering pinds and tarpan with unwavering faith, establishing the practice that came to be known as Shraddha, literally meaning an act performed 'with faith.' This story emphasizes that the ritual's power lies not just in its correct performance, but in the sincerity and devotion behind it.

Pind Daan
