Significance & Origin
Pind Daan is the ritual offering of rice and barley balls (pinds) to departed ancestors, believed to provide them a subtle body and nourishment in the afterlife until they attain liberation.
Origin Story
The Ramayana narrates that after King Dasharatha's passing, Lord Rama, still in exile, was unable to immediately perform his father's final rites. Later, upon reaching Gaya during his journey, Rama performed Pind Daan for Dasharatha on the banks of the Falgu river. It is said that Dasharatha's spirit appeared and blessed Rama, confirming that his soul had finally attained peace through this offering. This event at Gaya established the ritual as one of the most powerful ways for descendants to liberate the souls of their ancestors.
