Narayan Bali Puja is performed for souls who died due to accident, suicide, murder or other untimely and unnatural circumstances, believed to otherwise remain trapped as restless spirits (Preta) unable to proceed further in their journey.
Origin Story
The Garuda Purana describes in detail how souls who depart through unnatural or violent deaths often fail to receive the proper final rites at the right time, causing them to linger between realms as a Preta rather than progressing towards their next existence. The text prescribes the Narayan Bali ritual, invoking Lord Vishnu (Narayan) himself as the presiding deity, as the necessary remedy to release such a soul from this intermediate suffering and grant it safe passage onward.

Sankalp
The circumstances and name of the departed soul are declared with the intention for liberation.
Narayan Puja
Lord Vishnu is worshipped as Narayan to preside over and bless the ritual.
