Mundan Sanskar is one of the sixteen sacred rites of passage, marking a child's first haircut, performed to remove impurities carried from birth and to invoke health, strength and longevity.
Origin Story
It is believed, as recorded in various Grihya Sutras, that hair present at birth carries traces of impurity from the womb and past-life tendencies. Sages prescribed that this hair be ceremonially removed through Mundan, symbolically freeing the child from these inherited impurities and marking a fresh spiritual beginning. Many families also perform this ritual at temples of Goddess Durga or Lord Shiva, offering the hair as a mark of devotion and gratitude for the child's safe growth.
