Significance & Origin
Mahakal Puja is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his form as Mahakaleshwar, the master of time (Kaal) itself, worshipped to seek protection from fear, negative influences, and the uncertainties governed by time.
Origin Story
As per the Shiv Purana, after Lord Shiva destroyed the demon Dushan and settled permanently in Avantika as the Jyotirlinga, the city came to be regarded as the seat of Kaal (time and death) itself, for it was believed that even death does not have power over those who take shelter under Mahakaleshwar. This is why Ujjain is considered a Moksha-dayini city, and worship of Mahakal here is believed to grant liberation from fear related to time, fate and death.
