Origin Story
The Matsya Purana describes how the demon Vastu Purush once lay across the cosmos causing great disturbance, until the devas collectively subdued him and placed him face-down beneath the earth, each god holding a part of his body in position. Grateful to be spared, Vastu Purush was granted the boon that any home built upon him would only be blessed with peace and prosperity if he was worshipped first. This is why every Griha Pravesh begins by pacifying Vastu Purush, ensuring the new home stands on his goodwill rather than his wrath.
