Significance & Origin
Gaya Shraddha is considered the most powerful and complete form of pind daan, performed at the sacred city of Gaya in Bihar, believed to grant permanent liberation (moksha) to ancestral souls in a single ritual.
Origin Story
It is said that when Lord Rama was delayed in returning from performing rites elsewhere, Sita, waiting at Gaya, took it upon herself to perform Pind Daan for King Dasharatha using sand from the Falgu river, with a banyan tree, a cow, and the river itself as witnesses. When Rama returned and doubted whether the ritual without proper materials could be valid, all the witnesses testified to its truth except the Falgu river, which stayed silent out of fear. Sita, in response, cursed the river to run dry on its surface forever, which is why the Falgu at Gaya flows underground to this day. Because of Sita's pind daan performed there, Gaya became eternally established as the ultimate site for ancestral liberation.
