Origin Story
As described in the Devi Mahatmyam of the Markandeya Purana, the demon Mahishasura had defeated the devas and taken control of the heavens, being unstoppable by any single god due to a boon. In response, all the gods combined their energies to create Goddess Durga, who rode into battle on a lion and, after nine days and nights of fierce combat, finally slayed Mahishasura, restoring peace to the three worlds. This victory is celebrated as Navratri and Durga Puja to this day.
